the anniversary of my first half marathon, celebrated by my fourth half marathon
the forecast called for rain. the sun shined
my parents and liz dropped me off just before the start of the san francisco u.s. half marathon
i started near the front and started fast. hitting the first hill three miles deep was difficult. my body didn't like it. my body wanted a bathroom. i plotted on
the course changed from previous versions due to golden gate bridge construction. the race traveled upwards, into the marin headlands. at mile seven, we reached the peak of the climb. going forward it was all downhill or virtually flat. i gained momentum
near mile eleven i came upon employees from the sports basement fervently cheering on runners. as i passed them i high-stepped like deion sanders. soon after, i noticed liz for the first time, snapping photos with my camera. "i love you," i yelled while pointing at her. i hoped that was equally touching and embarrassing for her
liz rode her bike along side me, albeit unbeknownst to me at the time, though i did see her pop in front of me at certain points to stop and wave me on
at mile twelve i checked my time. i was at roughly 1:33 with a little over a mile remaining. at that moment i wanted to beat 1:40. a small climb in the middle of the final mile eliminated that chance
i saw my parents in the stands cheering me on with signs. i powered through the finish line. 1:41:53. that's good for 200 place out of 3,541 race participants. not a bad run at all. 13.1 miles
